Dear Moms and Dads,

Today I’m sending home the first graded work of the year.  As you already know, these grades are recorded on Option C, which is available for you to check at any time.  Several of the papers in tonight’s Thursday Folder are not recorded in the quarter grades, but were used only for a baseline.   (For example, if your child has a Math Test 1A, we used this to help determine which math class was appropriate for you child.  This grade isn’t part of the 1st Quarter work.

I’m trying to impress on the students that “neatness counts” in all the work we do.  Sloppiness leads to mistakes, as well as to mistaken impressions about the quality of our work and effort.  If I can’t read the paper or it’s crumpled, dirty, etc, I will return it to be reworked or deduct points from the grade.

Our weekly spelling test is almost always on Friday.  Weekend homework will only be AR reading.  I plan to review our school AR policy and Grade 5 requirements aligned with that policy next Wednesday evening at our Curriculum Night.  But, in brief, most Grade 5 students are required to accumulate 23 AR points per quarter.
